Short answer: settle money, rules, and trophies before the draft starts, not after. Every league argument that ends a friendship started with something that was never written down in August.
The 2026 NFL season kicks off Wednesday, September 9, so most drafts land in the last week of August or the first week of September. Here is the checklist.
Two weeks before the draft
- Confirm every manager in writing. Verbal commitments are how you end up with 11 teams.
- Set the buy in and the payout split. Publish it. Do not leave it as "we will figure it out."
- Lock scoring settings and roster size. Changing scoring after the draft invalidates everyone's board.
- Decide the last place punishment and write it into the rules. See our punishment ideas.
- Order the trophies. Engraving plus shipping takes about a week, and you want them on the table at the draft.
One week before
- Send the draft time, location, and link. Send it twice.
- Collect the dues. All of them. A commissioner chasing money in week 6 is a commissioner who quits in week 7.
- Set the draft order and publish how it was determined.
- Confirm your tiebreaker rules for the regular season and the playoffs.
Draft day
- Put both trophies on the table. The champion award and the last place award. This is the single cheapest thing a commissioner can do to raise engagement for the whole season.
- Read the payout and the punishment out loud before the first pick.
- Take a group photo with the trophies. You will want it in December.
Which trophies to buy
You need two, and they should feel like they belong to the same league.
- Champion, budget league: the Personalized Football Cobra Award (from $14.00) or the Football Trophy Graphite Finish (from $16.00). Both engrave four lines and look like a real award.
- Champion, serious league: the Fantasy Football Award, Commissioner Gift (from $74.99) or the Fantasy Football Championship Trophy (from $134.99), both of which carry a FANTASY FOOTBALL medallion rather than a generic football.
- Champion, league that plans to run forever: the Fantasy Football Perpetual League Award (from $179.99), built to carry a new year plate every season.
- Last place: the Fantasy Football Last Place Trophy (The Sacko) (from $33.99). Nonnegotiable.
The commissioner gift nobody thinks about
Commissioners do a thankless job. If your league has been running more than three years, the managers should quietly pitch in for an award with the commissioner's name on it. It is the only trophy in the league that gets given rather than won.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do most fantasy football drafts happen?
The last week of August and the first week of September. The 2026 NFL season kicks off Wednesday, September 9, and most leagues draft within the ten days before that.
How much should a fantasy football league spend on trophies?
Most leagues budget one buy in. A champion trophy and a last place trophy together run about $48 to $170 depending on the tier you choose.
Should the trophy be at the draft or at the banquet?
Both. At the draft it sets the stakes, and at the banquet it gets handed over. That is why a traveling trophy works better than a new one each year.
How fast can I get a trophy engraved?
We engrave in 2 to 3 business days and ship from Alabama with tracking. Rush production is available at checkout if your draft is this week.
