What these are for

Out of Service / Do Not Operate tags mark a vehicle or machine that has been pulled from service, so nobody starts it while it is waiting on repair.

The rule behind it

Marking equipment that must not be operated is central to OSHA 29 CFR §1910.147 (the control of hazardous energy — lockout/tagout), and for powered industrial trucks §1910.178(q)(7) requires that a truck in unsafe operating condition be removed from service until it is repaired.

Ideal For

  • Maintenance shops marking equipment awaiting parts or repair
  • Fleet managers deadlining a vehicle that failed inspection
  • Warehouse EHS teams tagging out a damaged lift truck
  • Plant maintenance marking machines during service

Applying them

Clean and dry the surface first — the permanent adhesive bonds to painted metal, glass, and smooth plastic, but not through wax, oil, or road film. Apply at room temperature and press firmly from the center outward.

FAQ

When should an Out of Service tag be used?
Whenever a vehicle or machine has been pulled from service and must not be operated — after a failed inspection, while awaiting parts, or during maintenance.

Is this the same as a lockout/tagout tag?
It serves the same "do not operate" warning purpose. OSHA 29 CFR §1910.147 governs the control of hazardous energy and sets specific requirements for an energy-control program — check that your tagging practice meets the standard your facility operates under.

Are these reusable?
These are printed on permanent-adhesive vinyl, so they are intended to be applied and then removed and replaced rather than moved between machines.

What size are these tags?
Each tag is 5" x 3", printed on 4.3 mil weatherproof vinyl with permanent adhesive.

Where should the tag be placed?
Where an operator would see it before starting the equipment — on the ignition area, steering wheel, control panel, or door. Apply to a clean, dry, smooth surface.

Will they survive an outdoor equipment yard?
Yes — 4.3 mil weatherproof vinyl with UV-resistant ink, rated for outdoor exposure.

Do you make matching daily inspection tags?
Yes — see our Forklift Daily Pre-Use Inspection Tags and Pre-Trip / Post-Trip Daily Inspection Forms.

Note on compliance: These decals are visual indicators only. Compliance requires a passed inspection by a qualified inspector and proper record retention under the applicable rule.
